HIGH SHERIFF OF CALHOUN PARRISH
(Tony Joe White)

It was said of the sheriff of Calhoun Parrish
Not to whiffer touched his daughter Emily
Far to look at her with a lustful eye were certain
To get you time in the pinna tannery
It was true she was quite voluptious
And it was true she had eyes for me
Then one night at a dance she walked up to me
And asked me would I meet her down by the creek uh

As I listened to her dangerous proposal
I thought about the high sheriff catching me
As I shook my head and quietly left the party
I heard a laughing say "You'll be sorry"
Then there came upon my door a loud disturbance
I opened it to the sheriff and his deputy
He said "Son did you molest my daughter?" uhu
I said "Sheriff I do not know of what you speak"
And they grabbed me roughly by the coller
And flung me sprawling out into the street
There were days in the jail with claustrophobia
And all out of there winked Emily

Well I find to work a bar loose from the window
And made my way into the woods of Calhoun
Late that night I came upon a cabin
It was the home of Ira Cross a friend I knew

Would ya'all mind if I sit down at your table?
Cause it's been a while since I've had time to eat
And I pay you all back when I'm able
But right now the high sheriff is after me

Yes he is
Oh yeah

WIDOW WIMBERLY
(Tony Joe White)

Widow Wimberly how will you manage now?
Widow Wimberly you've got to get by somehow
All your childrens have married off
And there's a grandchild you've never seen
And all your other kinfolks have moved away too
And mister Wimberly died last spring, yes he did

Widow Wimberly how do you still manage to smile?
Widow Wimberly I like to stop and talk with you a while
You ain't got no one to chop your wood
No one to mend your fence
If you had the money you could hire some help
But it is hard to even pay your rent, yes it is

La la Lord
Widow Wimberly how do you still manage to smile?
Widow Wimberly I like to stop and learn from you a while

Widow Wimberly how do you still manage to smile?
Widow Wimberly I like to stop and learn from you a while

CONJURE WOMAN
(Tony Joe White)

On a very hot and moonlit night
In the glow of a campfire
An old woman was mumblin' strange words
And the flame was jumpin' higher
Lawd, Lawd, Lawd she cried
If only I had a piece of a bad sign

Some people called her a conjure woman
It was said she cast a bad spell
Others said she was a witch
She'd chunk you in a deep dark well
All along the river
You could hear her soulful howl
If only I had the tongue of a hoot owl

Conjure woman, conjure woman
Conjure woman don't put no spell on me
Conjure woman stay away from me

Mmm, mmm, uh

She cried out in anguish
In the swamp where she stayed so long
And clutched the moss to her barren BReast
Her need for company was strong
Lawd, Lawd, Lawd she said
If only I had the tooth of a crawdad

Conjure woman, conjure woman, conjure woman
Conjure woman, conjure woman, conjure woman
Conjure wohuhu, conjure woman

Lord, don't you put no bad spell on me!

SAVE YOUR SUGAR FOR ME
(Tony Joe White)

See you in the hall room
Meet you after school
Laying in your backyard
Uh the grass is cool
Laying on our backs now
Looking at the sky
No words have passed between us
We say it with our eyes

Save your sugar for me, Save your sugar for me
Save your sugar for me, I'll save my sugar for you

And down in the swamps now
Running through the woods
Splashing in the water
Uh it feels so good
Witches hair are shining
Hanging of the trees
You begin to shiver
I hold you close to me

Save your sugar for me, Save your sugar for me
Save your sugar for me, I'll save my sugar for you

Midnight start to falling
I've got to get you home
You know I hate to go now
But we've been gone too long
Sneak you in your window
Kiss you through the screen
See you in the morning
I'll love you in my dreams

Save your sugar for me, Save your sugar for me
Save your sugar for me, I'll save my sugar for you

GROUPY GIRL
(Tony Joe White)

Once there was a young girl
Who was a good time fun girl
And she went through her young girl live a-singing
Then at the time of sixteen
She got into a new thing
She dugged the groups and the songs that they would sing
Into her life there came a long hair
Who said that she was nowhere
Unless she showed his friends some of her favours

Groupy girl you know you do your thing so fine
But groupy girl you get old before your time

Yeah

Like a joint she was passed 'round
By the groups that came into the town
And she no longer cared about her wellfare
With her leather bags and muskskin shoes
She acts as if she is nothing to lose
And she no longer combs her pretty long hair

Oh groupy girl you know you do your thing so fine
Yes you do!
Groupy girl you get old before your time

HARD TO HANDLE
(O. Redding, A. Isbell and A. Jones)

Ungr, Owie
Baby here I am, I'm a man upon a scene
I can't give you what you want
But you gotta come home to me
Honey, I got some good old loving
And I got some more in store
When I get to whippin' it on
Well you gotta come back for more

Boys will come and down by the dozen
But that ain't nothing but drugstore love
Huely thing let me light your candle
Cause mama I'm so hard to handle now, yes I am

Action speaks louder then words
I'm a man of great experience
I know you got some other guy
But I can love you better then him
Come on baby now take my hand
I'm gonna proof every word I say
I'll advertise your love for free
But you gotta put your add for me

Boys will come and down by the dozen
But that ain't nothing but drugstore love
Huely thing let me light your candle
Cause mama I'm so hard to handle now, yes I am

Give it to me!

Ungr, baby here I am, I'm a man upon a scene
I can't give you what you want
But you gotta come home to me
Honey, I gotta gotta some good old loving
And I got some more in store
When I get to whippin' it on
Well you gotta come back for more

Boys will come and down by the dozen
But that ain't nothing but kid stuff love
Huely thing let me light your candle
Cause mama I'm so hard to handle now, yes I am

WHAT DOES IT TAKE (TO WIN YOUR LOVE)
(V. Bullock, J. BRistol, H. Fuqua)

What does it take to win your love for me?
How can I make this dream come true for me?
Well I just gotta know
Baby cause I love you so

I tried, I tried, I tried
And I tried in every way I could
To make you see how much I love you
Uh baby I thought you understood
Yeah you gotta make me see
What does it take to win your love for me?

I just gotta know
Baby I love you so

Oh Lord, I tried
I tried in every way I could
To make you see how much I love you
Uh hon' I thought you understood
I just gotta know
Baby cause I love you so

Yeah I just gotta know
Baby I love you so

MY FRIEND
(D. Fritts, S. Oldham)

Just a tag along
Always in the way
You was so silly then
My friend
The patter of your feet
Followed me down the street
But I didn't know you then
My friend

From pigtails and playing with dolls
And all those childish things
You've became a woman
With all the beautiness it BRings

When I had my chance
I didn't make my plea
I was so foolish then
My friend
But now you're the star of the show
But you don't notice me
Oh how things might have been
My friend

Now I remember when you use to follow me round the block
Huh and I'ld chase you away
Now I wonder why I couldn't see that you changed your childish ways
And you become a woman and uh what a woman!

Just a tag along
Uh you was always in my way
You was so silly then
My friend
The patter of your feet
Uh you followed me down the street
But I didn't know you then
My friend

STOCKHOLM BLUES
(Tony Joe White)

BOOM BOOM
(John Lee Hooker)

Could you dig this Swan? Yeah!

Ungr

Boom, boom, boom, boom
Shoot you right down
Right of your feet
Take you home with me
Take you in my house
Take you in my room
Lay on my bed
Boom, boom, boom, boom

Ungr, ungr, ungr, ungr
Gonna shoot you right down
Right of your feet
Take you home with me
Take you in my house
Take you in my room
Lay on my bed
Boom, boom, boom, boom

The way you walk that walk
Talk that talk
You knock me out
Right over my feet
Boom, boom, boom, boom
Boom, boom, boom, boom
Gonna shoot you right down
Ahu, ahu

Auw, auw, auw, auw
Gonna shoot you right down
Right of your feet
Take you home with ... with me

Boom, boom, boom, boom
Gonna shoot you right down
Right of your feet
Take you home with me
Take you in my house
Take you in my room
Lay on my bed
Ungr
Ungr, ungr, ungr, ungr
Boom, boom, boom, boom
Uh yeah

Boom, boom, boom, boom
Boom, boom, boom, boom
Boom, boom, boom
Boom, boom, boom
